Your brain on a bull market is your broker’s favorite customer.

Dopamine, FOMO and the 2026 melt-up: why feeling like a genius is the most expensive emotion in finance.

The most dangerous chart in finance is your own portfolio, up 40%, viewed at 11pm. Neurologically, unexpected gains hit the same reward circuitry as any other chemical shortcut — and the brain’s response to repeated wins is not caution. It is escalation.

In lab studies, subjects on winning streaks systematically increase position size while their accuracy at predicting the next outcome stays flat. The wins change the betting, not the knowing. Traders call it “playing with house money.” Your brain files it under “I am the house.”

This is why bull markets manufacture financial content. Every melt-up produces a cohort who mistake beta for brains, monetize the confidence, and sell courses at precisely the moment their edge — the market going up — is most crowded. The 2021 class is now quietly running payroll software. The 2026 class is currently in your feed.

The fix is not intelligence. Smart people compound the error faster, because they are better at building narratives to justify the position. The fix is process: position sizes set in advance, a written thesis for every holding, and one designated person allowed to ask “what if you’re just lucky?”

A bull market is a machine for converting luck into confidence, and confidence into position size.

Our rule on the desk: any decision made while your portfolio is at an all-time high gets a 48-hour cooling period. You will hate this rule exactly as often as it saves you.

Wednesday’s Head Check memo runs a monthly “genius audit” — three questions that separate process from luck. It takes four minutes and it is the highest-ROI reading we publish.

Chapter 6 — “Tails, You Win” — is the antidote to melt-up brain. Luck and risk are the same force wearing different jackets.
